For those of you who love a book to inspire days out, as a reference or some pre course reading I have complied a list of useful books.


Hill Walking by Steve Long Published by MLTUK - a great rall in one reference book for all thing Hill Walking with chapters on weather, route finding, navigation, emergency procedures and more - THE handbook for the Mountain Leader and Walking group Leader Awards.

Navigation by Carlo Forte Published by MLTUK - a detailed book on navigation in the mountains.

Nature of Snowdonia by Mike Raine Published by Pesda Press - if you are interested in Flora, Fauna, Geology, Glaciation or Welsh Myths and Legends then this is the book for you, easy to read sections with enough detail to be interesting but not so much you are overwhelmed.

Hostile Habitats Published by SMC - a great book with very detailed information on the flora, fauna, geology and glaciation of Scotlands upland envirmonment.

Munros Published by SMC - a great book for searching out routes up the Munros (peaks over 3000ft in Scotland), you can start ticking the list in the front if you like!!

Corbetts Published by SMC - the Corbett’s are smaller than Munros and often quieter and more interesting this book if definately one for those who seek out peace and quiet off the beaten track.


Winter Skills by Andy Cunningham & Allen Fyffe Published by MLTUK - the definitive winter skills handbook, this book has detailed chapters on winter walking, winter weather, winter navigation, avalanche avoidance and winter climbing and mountianeering skills.

Scotland’s Winter Mountains by Martin Moran - an excellent book with chapters on techniques, weather, avalanche and more. Martin Moran adds personal stories to his instructional chapters to illustrate the epics of the scottish winter.

Winter Climbing + by Neil Gresham & Ian Parnell Published by RockFax - an instructional guide to winter climbing with chapters on training, snow ice and mixed climbing, ropework, mental preparation and more.

Cold Climbs by Ken Wilson - A great historical book with chapters on winter climbing routes throughout the UK, the photos are a little dated by the stories put you on the route.

A Chance in a Million;Scottish Avalanches by Blyth Wright & Bob Barton Published by SMC - stories of Scottish Avalanches

Avalanche by Roberto Bolognesi Published by Cicerone - a pocket guide to avalanches and companion to Snow also by Roberton Bolognesi - both easy to read.


Scottish Winter Climbs by Andy Nisbet Published by SMC - a great all in one guide to Scotlands best winter climbs. The guide book covers the whole of scotland and selects the best routes in each area.

Welsh Winter ClImbs - at the moment Ground Up have published an interim guide to North Wales Winter climbing, the old welsh winter climbs is out of date, the new guide has limited routes in the lower and mid grades so watch this space re:Welsh Winter Climbs.


Rock Climbing by Libby Peter Published by MLTUK - a great book illustrating techniques for climbing and mountainering - the Handbook for the Mountain Instructor Award and Single Pitch Awards

Trad Climbing + by Adrian Berry & John Arran Published by ROCKFAX - a great book with chapters on training, mental preparation, ropework, rescue techniques, gear selection and much more

Sport Climbing + by Adrian Berry & Steve McClure Published by ROCKFAX - similar to Trad climbing + but specifically for sports climbing focussing helping you to push your grade.



North Wales Rock by Simon Panton Published by Ground Up Climbing - a great ‘best of’ north wales book with mountain and coastal crags included routes from Diff to E5, great colour topos and route descriptions. Put together by a group of keen local climbers.

Scrambles in Snowdonia - a new version due to be published by Ground Up Climbing next year 2012.

Pembroke Published by ROCKFAX - a great guide to the most popular crags in Pembroke for more definitive guides check out the Climbers Club ones


Scottish Rock Climbs by Andy Nisbet published by SMC - the best Scottish rock in one book - Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, Skye, Cairngorms, Torridon etc

Scottish Rock Vol 1 & 2 by Gary Latter Published by Pesda Press from the borders to the Highlands & Islands, Gary Latter has selected the best Scottish rock routes taken great photos and put together two fine volumes.


Lake District Rock Published By Fell & Rock Climbing Club

Grit East & West Published by ROCKFAX - excellent select guides to gritstone crags in and around the Peak District

West Country Rock Published by ROCKFAX - an excellent select guide to the west counrty covering coastal and inland crags both sports and trad climbing in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset & Dorset.

Northern Limestone Published by ROCKFAX - excellent guide to limestone of northern England at present out of print to be replaced by Peak Limestone & Yorkshire Limestone

Northern England Published by ROCKFAX - covers the crags of Northumberland, Yorkshire and Durham.
