Improvers Scottish Winter Climbing Course
Who is ‘Improvers Winter Climbing’ for?
This course is for people who want to take their winter climbing a step further, perhaps by exploring winter venues beyond Ben Nevis and Cairngorm, or by trying a style of winter climbing you have not done before. A good level of fitness is important when heading out into the hills in the winter, a minimum of 1 hours walk in is required to get to the winter climbing venues. Perhaps you would like to climb some of the classic winter routes found in Ken Wilson’s Cold Climbs book, if so this is the course for you.
This course can be a 1 day refresher, a weekend or a 5 day course.
What will be covered?
The Improvers Winter Climbing course is run at a maximum ratio of 1 instructor : 2 participants. This ensures that we can teach you what you need to know for the development of your winter climbing and mountaineering. We can cover many aspects of climbing including
Avalanche Awareness and weather
Movement on snow, rock and ice - graded routes IV +
Retreating - abseiling
Route choice and route finding
Gear placements in winter
Snow and ice belays
What previous clients thought ...
“Thanks to for the instruction and time . I am off to Braemar this weekend and determined to get some good leads in and consolidate my learning and keep the confidence going. I had a great time on the climb.”
Lizzie Potts, Scottish Ladies Climbing Club
“Going over the technical stuff and learning the right and wrong way of doing things, and the bit of practice that we had in calm conditions, has given me the confidence I lacked. I was out there on Wednesday putting some of into practice on Crotched Gully, where I led the pitch before the exit through the cornice (full of wind blown snow!). So thanks for that and the pics and a very enjoyable day.”
Mary Stewart, Scottish Ladies Climbing Club
What if the weather is bad?
We will endeavour to spend as much time as possible out in the mountains, however if the weather is bad we can often cover many of the skills in more sheltered areas or a climbing wall. If there is no snow we can often cover many winter climbing skills on climbing walls and crags.
