14 peaks - 3000ft peaks of Snowdonia
On Crib y Ddysgl heading towards Crib Goch at the start of a 14 peaks challenge
Who is ‘14 peaks’ for?
There are 14 peaks in Snowdonia that are over 3000ft high. To ascend all of them involves a beautiful journey on 3 different massifs, crossing 3 deep glacially formed valleys. Super fit fell runners will do this route in hours, however you do not need to be a fell runner to complete the journey. Walking and some scrambling (Crib Goch is very exposed) are involved so you need to be hill fit and confident moving on exposed scrambling terrain.
The peaks included are
CARNEDDAU - Pen Yr Ole Wen - 3208ft, Carnedd Dafydd - 3425ft, Yr Elen - 3156ft, Carnedd Llewelyn - 3490ft, Foel Grach - 320ft, Garnedd Uchaf - 3038ft & Foel Fras - 3090ft.
GLYDERAU - Tryfan - 3002ft, Glyder Fach - 3261ft, Glyder Fawr - 3277ft, Y Garn - 3196ft & Elidir Fawr - 3031ft
SNOWDON - Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) - 3560ft, Carnedd Ugain - 3494ft & Crib Goch 3028ft
What will be covered?
The challenge can be tailored to your level of enthusiasm and fitness. You will be guided along the route by a qualified mountain leader or instructor, they will be able to point out things of interest, navigate, look after your safety and choose the best route for the conditions.
Over 2 days you must be very fit, you will be guided along the route completing the Carneddau on one day and the Glyders and Snowdon massifs on the other day. These are two big days with lots of ascent and descent.
Over 3 days we can split the journey into each Massif - Carneddau, Glyderau and Snowdon Range, again big days but without as much up and down each day, once you have gained height for the day you are up high until it is time to descend to the valley.
Over 5 days we can split things down further and allow for more instructional input, teaching you navigation and scrambling skills.
What if the weather is bad?
The weather has to be pretty bad to stop a course from running, however if high winds are forecast it is often not safe to go to higher exposed peaks, this can result in you not completing the peak you hoped to summit. Completing all the peaks is dependent on the weather and the fitness of the participants being at a level that is deemed safe by the instructor on the course.
